Day 66 Saturday, October 06, 2001
Raining like crazy this morning. Good thing we covered all the
stuff well. We head to Monticello to rent a big ass saw and pick
up a few things. I need propane! No hot water! No shower! It
stops raining and gets cool and windy. I have a good amount of
water on the subfloor, I guess its pretty level. Glad I sealed
it to protect it from water damage.
My goal of notching all of course 12 and installing them proved
unrealistic. The rented saw doesn't work well. The shoe is bent
and it doesn't cut a 90 degree angle. Good thing I bought $60.00
worth of blade. In order to notch the 6 inch thick logs, I have
to make a cut on the inside surface which is no problem. Then a
cut on the outside curved surface which is tricky. Then a cut on
each end of the notch to the depth required for the particular
window or door, all of which are different except for 2. Then use
the reciprocating saw to saw between the cuts. This took the
whole day. Laurie did all the layout and measurements and I did
all the cutting.
Now we must remove all the window and door bucks, add a gasket
between them and the logs, kerf cut the ends of the logs around
the windows and doors, reinstall the bucks, re-plumb and level
the bucks and nail them to the logs. Then we can install the
header logs. I must have been dreaming. Tomorrow is another day.
Gonna be cold. Bummer.
10 hours, rain early then cool and windy.
